Thinking about Pregnancy? Think about quitting smoking. Quitting smoking is one of the best things you can do to improve your health and better your baby’s chances for good health now and beyond. Smoking can make it harder to become pregnant, can increase your chances of having a miscarriage and other serious complications.
Healthier Pregnancy
By not smoking your baby…
Is less likely to be born too soon or prematurely
More likely to be born at a healthy weight
More likely of being born without serious birth defects
Has a better chance of their brain developing normally
Will have a reduced risk of SIDS (Sudden Infant Death Syndrome).
By not smoking you…
Can lower your chance of going into labor too soon and having an underweight baby
Lower your chance of too much bleeding during delivery
Raise your chances of bringing your baby home right away instead of a prolonged hospital stay due to health problems, especially if your baby is underweight
Save money that you can spend on other things (e.g., diapers and baby clothes).
Smell better, your home will smell better, and your food will smell and taste better!
Back Home...
Stay smoke–free and make your home a “no smoking zone.” That way you, your baby, and others will not be exposed to dangerous second and thirdhand smoke.
Your baby and younger children will have fewer colds, chest colds, ear infections, and reduce their risk of getting pneumonia, bronchitis, and asthma.
As children grow without exposure to secondhand smoke they tend to miss fewer days of school because of asthma and breathing illnesses; and they are less likely to become adult smokers.
